As the venue of the Indo-German Urban Mela is the more than 90-year old YMCA College of Physical Education, home ground for sports enthusiasts and achievers, the Goethe-Institut/Max Mueller Bhavan Chennai is presenting a few sports events as part of the Mela.

Germany’s victory in the London Olympics will no doubt add an extra edge to the planned Beach Volleyball Workshop during the Mela and attract attention to the exhibition match between the Bavarian pros Buchner and Richter and Chennai champions Pradeep John and Mohan.

Pradeep John and Mohan have known each other since 1994 as juniors when they played for Tamil Nadu. In 1999, they chose to end their volleyball career and start instead with beach volleyball. Pradeep John and Mohan took part in nine finals of the Senior National Championship. They won their only International title in Bangladesh in 2008. This year, the top pair’s fourth national beach volleyball title was the first win on home turf at the Marina Beach in Chennai. It was the first national title in their hometown.

Hannes Buchner and Dominik Richter have been playing since the late 90s and had diverse games in the regional league and second National League. Both decided to collaborate together in beach volleyball in 2000 and have been a very successful "Beachcombo" for the past 12 years. In this time Hannes Buchner and Dominik Richter have played over 100 tournaments together, which is quite a record in Germany and probably in the world. The biggest success Buchner and Richter had was the 9th place at the German beach volleyball championship in 2007 and the five Bavarian master titles in 2003, 2006 and 2009. In 2010, they won all four beach masters from the Bavarian volleyball association.
