Urban Style Performance
Urban dance workshops will be led by Can Benjamin Kazim Gülec. Gülec's style of dancing is versatile and eclectic, touching on many genres in addition to hip-hop such as house, popping, locking, ballet and B-boying. He is increasingly focussing his attention on choreography and has developed a number of pieces for Hamburg based groups. Gülec recently collaborated with German popping dancer Robozee to create a piece called 'Mobility'. This was a collaboration between Goethe-Institut, Nowosibirsk and the HipHop Academy and was performed in both Hamburg and Moscow. In addition to developing his career as a choreographer, Gülec's chief objective is to make it into the finals of Juste Debout, one of the most iconic international street dance competitions.
"Tasek" Gerrit Peters will conduct graffiti workshops. One of Tasek's main objectives, as an artist is to dismantle ideological walls using artistic and creative methods in order to overcome social boundaries. Consequently, he doesn't restrain himself with stylistic and methodical techniques but rather feels at home with a variety of materials and methods such as calligraphy, serigraphy, and of course the spray can. Having a constructive interaction with his surroundings and environment is always at the heart of Tasek's work, which is connoted in lucid clear forms carrying abstract and complex meanings.
Urban Music workshops will be led by American born, Cologne based hip-hop artist Akua Naru. Hailing from New Haven, this female wordsmith's journey has had many stops: Philadelphia, China, and Ghana, among others. Akua's extensive travels have no doubt been beneficial giving her wisdom and perspective, both of which are evident in her music. With the release of her debut album "The Journey Aflame", Akua has quickly positioned herself on the scene as a model for what women can achieve in hip-hop. Since the release of her album, Akua has been picked up by media across the world with the album acknowledged by critics as a classic hip-hop contribution. Besides working with her band DIGFLO, she has performed with the legendary Fela Kuti drummer Tony Allen, toured with classic hip-hop group Lords Of The Underground and collaborated with Ursula Rucker, Blitz The Ambassador, and Voice Of Germany soul singer, Mic Donet.
Akua Naru, Tasek and Can are all working as mentors at the HipHop Academy Hamburg.
